Why Grassfed Beef

Angus SteerHave you ever heard..."You are what you eat"?

Well to better understand how that applies to eating grass fed beef, we need to discuss what grains are doing to our country. Prior to the industrialization of grain, grain played a very small role in our overall diet. With the help of modern machinery Americans soon found themselves with a surplus of grain. Surplus grain drove down the price of grain, which in turn made the food industry look at grain as a number one source for food fillers. There is very little that does not have wheat or grain in it. Ranchers also took notice of cheap grain and started using it as feed for cattle, chickens, and many other livestock.

So what? Who cares?

Well I do, and many others that have taken notice of the increase of heart disease, obesity, students with ADD, and many other disorders in the past 50 or 60 years. There is one common thread with all americans that has changed dramatically in the past 50-60 years...GRAIN IS IN EVERYTHING. What is so bad about grain? Let's focus on cattle. Most ranchers raise their cattle on grass and supplement with grain. When calves reach a weight between 500 - 700 lbs they sell them to feedlot owners who fatten them on grain for up to 200 days.

There are side effects to this quick feeding process...it's the health of the animal. No problem, they just keep giving them antibiotics to keep them alive until they are butchered. YUM...very appetizingThis of course is the worst step of the entire cattle raising process. Grain changes the entire chemical makeup of the animal, which in turn, effects it's health. The proof is in the grease...yes, the grease. You will have a steak that has a lot of marbling and will be very tender but the taste is bland and the grease is tough on the heart.  At a chemical level you have to look at the ratio of Omega-6 Fatty Acids to Omega-3 Fatty Acids.  You want a ratio of 1:1 for optimal cellular health.  Grass is the only option that can provide this ratio in livestock. Let's return to that feedlot that fed grain for 200 days.  The ratio of Omega-6 to Omega 3 jumps to an alarming 20:1...WOW!

FYI, anything over 4:1 is unhealthy to your body, 20:1 has to be destructive (Typical American diet ranges from 20:1 to 50:1). The health care system doesn' t mind though.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to change our focus to Grass Fed meats. CR GRASSFED BEEF would love to provide your family with some great tasting Grass Fed Beef.
